In October 1999, the school's Physical Education Department was established, evolving from the Physical Education Teaching and Research Section of the Basic Department, as a direct teaching unit of the school. In November 2018, the department was renamed the Department of Physical Education. In August 2019, the department was restructured to include an Administrative Office, a Teaching Management Office, a Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball Teaching and Research Section, a Table Tennis, Badminton, and Tennis Teaching and Research Section, an Artistic and Physical Education Teaching and Research Section, a Recreational Sports Teaching and Research Section, a Physical Education Research Institute, a Student Extracurricular Sports and Physical Fitness Testing Center, and a Student Sports Training and Competition Center.
The Physical Education Department currently boasts a faculty of 43 members, comprising 5 administrative staff, 35 educators, and 3 skilled technical personnel. Predominantly holding master's degrees or higher, our teaching staff includes a significant proportion with senior professional ranks, accounting for 54% of the total. We are proud to have 1 international referee and 4 national referees on our team. Numerous faculty members have been recognized with prestigious accolades such as "Provincial Excellent Teacher," "Provincial Civilized Teacher," and "Outstanding Teacher in the Provincial Education System."
The Physical Education Department is at the forefront of delivering a comprehensive physical education curriculum, including mandatory courses for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as elective courses that cater to the broader university community. Our department is also actively engaged in sports research, coaching athletic teams, organizing competitive events, conducting student fitness assessments, and guiding sports clubs and community service initiatives.The department has been honored on numerous occasions with awards , such as the "Outstanding Organization Award for the National Student Physical Health Standards Test," "Advanced Unit for Mass Activities in Zhengzhou City," and the "National Aerobic Exercise Popularization Award." Moreover, our department has been honored with titles like "Civilized Unit of the School" and "Advanced Unit for Teacher Ethics and Professionalism," reflecting our commitment to excellence in both teaching and community engagement.
Under the guidance of the CPC Zhongyuan University of Technology Committee, the Physical Education Department is committed to the principles outlined in key documents such as the Opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on Strengthening Youth Sports and Enhancing the Physical Fitness of Young People, the Basic Standards for Physical Education in Higher Education Institutions, and the Ten Regulations on Physical Education in General Higher Education Institutions in Henan Province. We embrace our university's philosophy that "school sports are a collective effort, involve everyone, and serve the health of faculty and students," and we adhere to the educational principles of "health first" and "focusing on teaching and nurturing students as the foundation." Emphasizing the themes of "unity, learning, and development," we have cultivated a unique approach to sports at our university, characterized by "centering on physical education, emphasizing group activities, leveraging sports testing, and leading with athletic training." We are proactively exploring the integration of sports courses both inside and outside the classroom, instituting a "morning exercise and extracurricular sports activity system," and actively promoting "sunshine health runs" and assessments based on the National Student Physical Health Standards. Leveraging the digital campus initiative, we have enhanced the digital and scientific management of physical education, extracurricular activities, and fitness testing. Our campus sports activities are vibrant and diverse, featuring three major sports cultural events: the University Sports Meet, the Sports Square Cultural Festival, and the Mini Marathon, as well as a series of campus sports competitions such as the "Zhonggong Cup" and the "Welcome Cup."
In recent years, our university's athletic teams have secured impressive achievements in a variety of sports competitions at both provincial and national levels. They have claimed third place, eighth place, and fifth place in the football events at the 6th, 7th, and 8th National University Games, respectively; the championship title in the Men's 60 kg category at the 11th Chinese University Fitness and Beauty Championship; both the Men's and Women's Team Championships at the Henan Province University Tennis Championship; and the top spot in the overall team scoring for the University Group at the Henan Province Fitness and Beauty Championship. Our university's sports programs have been highlighted in feature articles by prominent media outlets, including China Sports Daily, Henan Daily, People's Daily Online, China News Service, Dahe Net, and Yingxiang Net.
